How to Face Your Giants with Confidence

You’re probably familiar with the story of David and Goliath. It’s full of remarkable details. And it holds timeless truths that will help you stand firm on your hardest days, confident that God will carry you through.

David was just a boy when he chose to face a giant in battle. That alone is impressive. But what’s even more amazing is how he did it. He walked onto that battlefield with confidence—not in himself, but in God.

You may never do battle against a literal Goliath, but sooner or later, everyone faces some kind of giant. Maybe you’re facing a medical, financial, or relational Goliath. The question is: How do you face your giant with the same God-given confidence and optimism David had?

The book of Psalms gives us the answer. It gives insight into four habits that gave David confidence. If you develop these same habits, you’ll be able to face the biggest giants, trusting God will see you through.

Tune in to God every morning. Before David began his day, he talked with God: “In the morning, LORD, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly” (Psalm 5:3 NIV).

Think on God's promises throughout the day. David faced constant pressures, including threats to his life. But he didn’t allow his life to be sidetracked by those anxieties because he kept his mind on God’s Word. The Living Bible paraphrase tells us he said, “Though the wicked hide along the way to kill me, I will quietly keep my mind upon your promises” (Psalm 119:95).

Trust in God's love even when things look bad. David said, “Why am I so sad? Why am I so troubled? I will put my hope in God, and once again I will praise him, my savior and my God” (Psalm 42:11 GNT). David knew that God had helped him in the past, and he had positive expectation that God would help him again in the future.

Talk with other believers. David didn’t face his life’s giants on his own. He hung out with positive people; he had emotional and spiritual support. In The Message paraphrase, he said, “I’m a friend and companion . . . of those committed to living by your rules” (Psalm 119:63).
