“Those who believe him discover that God is a fountain of truth.” John 3:33 (TLB)
Everybody is betting their life on something. An atheist is betting that there is no God. For me, I’m betting my life that Jesus is who he said he was.
What are you betting your life on? Whatever it is, you better have a good reason for it. Have you examined the evidence? Have you given it serious thought? The world says to find your own truth, but the Bible says there is one—and only one—truth, and God wants you to know it! Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life” (John 14:6 NIV). And The Living Bible paraphrase says, “Those who believe him discover that God is a fountain of truth” (John 3:33).
So what do you do once you discover the truth about God, Jesus, and the Bible? You do four things.
1. Believe it. The Bible gives clear instructions: “You must continue to believe this truth and stand firmly in it. Don’t drift away from the assurance you received when you heard the Good News” (Colossians 1:23 NLT). Once you’ve discovered and accepted the truth, you have to intentionally choose to keep believing it.
2. Do it. Truth is not just an intellectual exercise. It’s something you do. You practice it. You apply it. You live it. You obey it. The Bible says, “Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me” (John 14:21 NLT). When you learn a new truth, don’t immediately go off in search of another truth. First, start obeying the truth you’ve just learned!
3. Stand for it. It’s easy to feel ashamed of the truth in a postmodern world that says truth doesn’t really matter. But choose to stand for truth anyway, even when you feel uncomfortable. The Bible teaches, “For we cannot oppose the truth, but must always stand for the truth” (2 Corinthians 13:8 NLT).
4. Spread it. God’s plan is for his people to work together in spreading the truth. This can look like sharing the Good News in your everyday life, participating in mission trips, or supporting missionaries and ministries by giving and praying. Jesus taught his followers, “Wherever you go in the world, tell everyone the Good News” (Mark 16:15 GW).
God’s truth should impact every part of your life. The Living Bible paraphrase says, “Let everything you do reflect your love of the truth and the fact that you are in dead earnest about it” (Titus 2:7). There’s a lot in the Bible that I don’t understand and that makes me uncomfortable. But the fact is, it’s the truth. And it’s the map I use to take me where God wants me to go.
What truth have you discovered but not yet begun obeying? How can you start obeying that truth today?
Are you standing for the truth even when it makes you uncomfortable? What’s one way you can start standing for the truth, with love?
How are you spreading the Good News?
